Virtual World Learning Update

I met with the CEO of Tandem Learning yesterday and am exploring the possibility of creating a virtual learning world as a form of continuing medical education for my organization. The meeting was fascinating! I saw demos and examples--really great!

The next step is a bigger meeting/demo with all my organization's senior management and clinical experts, but I am confident they will like what they see.

I wanted to share with you all one example that was shared with me: a "virtual territory" training for pharmaceutical sales reps which involves scenario-based decision making.

Check this out:

Please share any thoughts or reactions you have! I may not respond immediately as I am traveling for work through Saturday, but I look forward to your comments.

  1. Dierdre, I was unable to view the video via the link above. It started to download or something, then winamp opened and it said it was playing, but I did not hear or see anything. Is there another format you can use to post? An embedded video might work best for most people, I think. [If you could post an update via a new entry so that it shows up in everyone's GoogleReader, that might be best, if it's no trouble.]

    thanks!

Otherwise, it sounds really interesting! What sort of platform would you be using? I assume it's like SecondLife or something?

  2. Agnes,

It's not my video so I don't have the ability to reformat or do anything with it. It's a video embedded in this company's web site. It may be that the link that was given to me is not open to others, but I am not sure.

Here's a link to the general description of this learning activity though, with still photos and text from the web site:

My understanding is that this company, Tandem Learning, programs its own platform/application for the specific client only. So we would not use an already existing platform, but we'd have one created and hosted for us. This means its expensive, but not totally crazy, especially if we got "pilot project" funding. In my meeting the other day, the CEO of the co. told me that it would be about $250K for a full virtual platform that would run and be hosted for a set amount of time. I think I could raise that.

Sorry for the inconvenience on the video. If others have trouble, would you please let me know?

  3. I was able to check out the video. It looks like a great way to train sales force in a realistic environment, but without the real pressure to make a sale. It seems the company has added a lot of data to teach how to use data to help prepare for meetings with doctors. Neat! Thanks for sharing. Will
